Latinos/Hispanics in STEM: A Career Path Series is a new seminar series organized in collaboration between the Latino Organization of Graduate Students (LOGRAS), the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), and the GoSTEM program.
These seminars will share experiences of successful professionals having a Latino/Hispanic heritage, and will be formed by a cohort of professionals who are working in academia, private industry, and government.

Dr. Alfonso Cerna-Diaz, Ph.D., P.E.
Geotechnical Engineer, AECOM Water Business Unit
April 26th, 2022, 4 p.m. – 5 p.m.
Dr. Alfonso Cerna-Diaz, Ph.D., P.E. is a geotechnical engineer at AECOM Water Business Unit in Denver, Colorado working in mining projects for large tailings dam facilities in the US. Alfonso holds a PhD in geotechnical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, He holds a MS degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería (UNI) in Lima Peru. Alfonso has focused most of his practice and research on geotechnical engineering for dams, including topics as soil liquefaction triggering estimation and mitigation, dynamic laboratory and centrifuge testing, nonlinear site response analysis, dynamic deformation analysis, material characterization , static liquefaction, in-situ testing, slope stability under static and dynamic conditions, and soil-structure interaction. Alfonso is member of the ASCE Geo-Institute and GEER.
