GoSTEM finishes a busy Fall with 3 special STEM events at its partner schools.

Latino STEM Education Day at Meadowcreek High School
On Saturday November 12th, 2016, GoSTEM, in partnership with the Meadowcreek High School Academy of Science, Technology, and Engineering hosted for the fifth time the Latino STEM Education Day at Meadowcreek HS. Students and families had the opportunity to attend bilingual workshops, in Spanish and English, on college access and financial aid. In addition, the event offered a variety of hands-on STEM activities and learning stations for the entire family facilitated by faculty, students, and staff both from Georgia Tech and Meadowcreek High School. Some of those activities included learning about the properties of materials at different temperatures, building towers, the use of 3D printing to build models, and robotics demonstrations. The attendees also had an opportunity to visit an exhibitors’ area where representatives from community organizations shared information about their services, programs, and resources. It was a day full of fun and learning about college and STEM!

Aerospace Engineering Guest Speaker at GoSTEM’s Pathways to College Program, Lilburn Middle School
On Wednesday November 9th, 2016, the GoSTEM’s Pathways to College students at Lilburn Middle School, enjoyed a special visit to their after school program by Dr. Claudio Di Leo, Assistant Professor of Aerospace Engineering at Georgia Tech. Prof. Di Leo introduced students to the world of Aerospace Engineering and engaged them in a fun and educational activity that involved building and testing balsa gliders. The activity culminated with a team competition that surprised the winners with 3D-printed trophies made by Georgia Tech students at the Aero Maker Space at Georgia Tech.

1st Annual Mustang Learning Conference at Nesbit Elementary School
On Monday October 10th, 2016, GoSTEM’s Faculty Advisory Board member, Dr. Julián Rímoli, Assistant Professor of Aerospace Engineering at Georgia Tech, was invited as the keynote speaker for the 1st Annual Mustang Learning Conference at one of the GoSTEM’s partner schools, Nesbit Elementary. Prof. Rímoli delighted an audience of 120 teachers with an inspirational keynote lecture focused on bridging the STEM educational gap for Latino students in Georgia.
